Candidates preparing to take this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Akuapem South district of the Eastern Region have expressed their readiness to sit for the exams. However, they have also expressed skepticism about their performance in the mathematics subject.
Around one thousand candidates from both public and private basic schools in the Akuapem South district are expected to write the BECE, scheduled to take place from August 7 to August 11, 2023. Last year, nearly 47% of candidates who wrote the BECE in the same district failed.
The 2023 candidates are optimistic about performing better in this year’s exams but are particularly concerned about the mathematics subject, which is affecting their confidence.
One student named Mable, a candidate from Aburi Anglican Junior High School, stated, “I have prepared for all the subjects. Maths is my problem. It is a subject that I didn’t like, so I am doing my best so I don’t fail.”
These concerns were raised at a career guidance and motivational event called “the mindset,” organized by Daniel Asiamah, the Assembly member for the Aburi West Electoral Area. Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM), a Ghanaian actor, director, and satirist who was one of the speakers at the event, suggested that there should be a revision of the teaching methodology for mathematics in Ghana. He emphasized the importance of teaching the subject in an exciting and engaging way to capture students’ interest.
Rodger Henaku Larbi, the Human Resource Manager at the Akuapem South Municipal Education Directorate, expressed hope that performance would improve this year due to efforts and interventions. He stated, “We have strategized very well and hope that this year our performance will improve drastically. We are presenting 1000 plus candidates, an improvement over what we presented last year, and we hope that they perform better.”
Speakers at the event, including specialists in information management systems and education, advised the students to maintain discipline and a positive mindset. They stressed the importance of determination and encouraged students to avoid examination malpractices.
Daniel Asiamah, in addition to organizing free extra classes for BECE candidates in his electoral area, also donated mathematical sets to all BECE candidates at the event.
