Amidst recent criticism of the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) by George Alex Mensah, the outgoing Director General of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo, a Political Science Professor at the University of Ghana, has strongly defended the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
In response to Mensah’s assertion that IGP Dampare is the worst in the history of the Ghana Police Service, Professor Gyampo termed such a characterization as a “palpable display of mental demention.”
Speaking on The Keypoints program on TV3/3FM, Professor Gyampo lauded IGP Dampare’s performance and urged against undermining his efforts.
According to Professor Gyampo, IGP Dampare is doing an excellent job, and it is unjust to tarnish his reputation. He emphasized that people should not “sit down when people are beginning to run him down.”
Highlighting some of Dr. Akuffo Dampare’s positive actions, Professor Gyampo mentioned the IGP’s commitment to police visibility and his willingness to engage directly with ordinary citizens.
He also praised Dampare’s boldness in enforcing traffic rules, even when it involves government officials and members of parliament.
Professor Gyampo expressed confidence in the parliamentary committee investigating the leaked audio recording about the IGP and their ability to address the pertinent issues.
However, he strongly disagreed with any characterization of the current IGP as the worst in the history of Ghana’s policing.
In his view, the criticisms of IGP Dampare fail to acknowledge the positive changes he has brought to the Ghana Police Service and represent an unjust and unfounded attack on his leadership.
