Inusah Abdulai Fuseini, former Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central constituency, has claimed that the Special Delegates Conference recently conducted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was unfairly skewed in favor of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 68% of the votes.
During an interview on Citi TV’s news analysis program, The Big Issue, Fuseini, a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized the conference for not living up to its promise of providing a free and equitable platform for all aspiring party leaders.
He argued that the process was manipulated in favor of Dr. Bawumia, who he referred to as the “establishment candidate” for the 2024 elections.
Fuseini raised concerns about alleged intimidation and violence against agents of some aspirants who did not support Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy.
He mentioned an incident in the North East region where a representative of a delegate was reportedly slapped because of their opposition to Dr. Bawumia.
He emphasized the influence of money in the election process, particularly in the case of Alan Kyerematen, who came in third.
Fuseini asserted that Kyerematen lacked the financial resources to support his campaign, contrasting it with his previous campaigns where he was known as “Alan Cash.”
The NPP was originally scheduled to hold a run-off election between Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko to determine one of the top five candidates for the November 4 conference.
However, the run-off was canceled after Boakye Agyarko decided not to participate, citing unconstitutional rules. The NPP’s Special Delegates Conference was held on August 26, with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerging as the winner.
