Thomas Ampem Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, has called on lawyers within the Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to start gathering evidence and documentation related to alleged corruption cases under the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He emphasized that this effort aims to expedite prosecution when the NDC returns to power in 2025.
Speaking during the opening of the 3rd Annual Lawyers Conference organized by the NDC Lawyers Association in Akosombo, Eastern Region, on September 1, 2023, Nyarko expressed his concern about what he perceived as an unprecedented level of corruption within the Akufo Addo / Bawumia-led NPP government.
He urged NDC lawyers to compile unofficial dossiers on allegedly corrupt NPP officials to ensure accountability to the people of Ghana.
Nyarko stated, “Anytime we engage in debate with our counterparts on the opposite side, they challenge us, saying if you claim they are corrupt, how many of our people have you been able to prosecute?
So, as our lawyers, you must begin to write down, prepare unofficial dossiers on those corrupt NPP officials in readiness for their prosecution in 2025 when we come to power.
That will be your greatest contribution to our party going forward.”
Additionally, Nyarko called on the NDC’s legal team to work diligently to secure victories in political cases. He emphasized the importance of winning these cases to boost the morale of party members and supporters ahead of the 2024 elections.
Edudzi Tamakloe, the Director of Legal Affairs for the NDC, urged members of the NDC Lawyers Association to enhance their knowledge of politically related legal matters, particularly those related to elections.
This, he argued, would contribute to the party’s success and the potential return of former President Mahama in 2025.
