Ernest Owusu Bempah, Deputy Director of Communication for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has emphasized the importance of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) providing comprehensive and easily understandable explanations regarding the ongoing controversies surrounding the new headquarters building project and the GH¢60.8 billion loss incurred last year.
In his view, these matters have escalated into a significant challenge for the government and its communicators.
Bempah highlighted the necessity for the central bank to break down the complex issues into layman’s terms to ensure that the public and party communicators fully comprehend the circumstances at hand.
The Minority in Parliament has been actively seeking answers from the central bank regarding various aspects of the new headquarters construction.
Among their inquiries are details about the land procurement process and the identities of consultants and project managers involved.
Speaking to journalists in Accra, Bempah expressed the NPP’s stance against wrongdoing and the importance of transparency in these matters.
He emphasized that the situation is becoming a liability for the government and the party, and called for the Bank of Ghana to provide clear explanations to alleviate concerns.
Bempah underscored that the Governor of the Bank of Ghana should address these issues promptly to safeguard the government’s image and political prospects in the upcoming 2024 elections.
The Deputy Communication Director urged the central bank to present a clear narrative, as vague or ambiguous explanations could hinder the understanding of ordinary Ghanaians.
He pointed out the gravity of the allegations, including a claim of missing money and the construction of a $250 million headquarters.
Acknowledging the Bank of Ghana’s crucial role in the nation’s economy, Bempah stated that they cannot afford to communicate complex matters in a way that leaves citizens perplexed.
He stressed that a clear explanation would facilitate better understanding and empower party communicators to effectively relay the information.
Notably, Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and private legal practitioner, called on the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to provide specific details about the project.
The Minority MPs have announced plans to stage a demonstration at the Bank of Ghana’s headquarters on September 5 to demand the resignation of the Governor and his two deputies following a GH¢60.8 billion loss in 2022.
The goal of this protest is to voice concerns about alleged financial irregularities and their implications on the economy.
