Richard Etornam Nyarko, the Eastern Regional Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed his belief that Julius Debrah, a former Chief of Staff, would be an ideal candidate for the running mate position alongside John Mahama for the 2024 Presidential election.
Nyarko’s endorsement of Julius Debrah comes shortly after Debrah distanced himself from calls to be considered for the running mate position, stating that he had not expressed any intention for the role.
Speaking at a general meeting by the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) at Koforidua Technical University (KTU), Nyarko emphasized the need for a running mate who understands the NDC’s ideology and has the interests of the youth at heart.
He stated, “The youth really want to have somebody who thinks like them, who stands on their side. So it will certainly not be anybody but the preferences are clear. President Mahama is promising us that he is coming to create jobs, he is coming because of the youth, he is coming to pen down certain revolutionary mechanisms that will make life meaningful for the youth.”
Nyarko continued, “So certainly we know that he is going to be ably supported by somebody who thinks like a youth, who stands on the side of the youth, somebody who is a politician enough, somebody who understands the ideals of the NDC and the concerns of the youth.”
He further expressed that Julius Debrah is the youth wing’s preferred choice for running mate due to his competence and his alignment with the aspirations of the youth. Nyarko believed that appointing Debrah as running mate would energize the youth in the party and Ghana at large to secure victory.
Nyarko also referenced the NDC’s history of tactical changes in the position of running mates, emphasizing that a fresh candidate could be beneficial for the party’s electoral success.
Various speakers at the TEIN branch General Meeting rallied the students to work hard and raise awareness about NDC policies. They criticized the current government for alleged corruption and incompetence across various sectors of the economy.
Dr. Martin Otu Offei, the NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate in New Juaben South and a Lecturer at KTU, assured support for any individual chosen as the running mate for the 2024 Presidential polls.
The event also saw Lawyer Isaac Minta Larbi, chairman of the Eastern Regional Legal team of NDC, promise to employ legal strategies to combat perceived intimidations and arbitrary arrests by the ruling party during the elections.
In attendance were New Juaben South Constituency Chairman Amuzu Selasie, Dr. Samuel Kwabena Ayittah (Patron, TEIN), Comrade Stephen Sawodjie, Comrade Evans Srenyame (Former Youth Organizer, Upper Manya Krobo), and Dennis Akorely, New Juaben South constituency youth organizer.
